Free media training on answering the tough questions

Free media training on answering the tough questions

Are you a charity? Ever had difficult issues or questions from the media or the public? We're putting together some training for around 50 people in the sector. Find out more below.

Introduction

This is a group media training day that aims to help charities deal with the difficult issues that many journalists, donors and volunteers ask about. It’s part of the media strand of the Understanding Charities Group.

The group has already met once, resulting in some excellent knowledge-sharing and informing this next stage. The day will provide effective training and the opportunity to share successes, failures, joys, frustrations and disappointments with your charity colleagues.

When

Thursday, August 27th, 10am – 4pm. Refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Where

Scope, 6 Market Road, London N7 9PW. It’s a short walk from Caledonian Road tube station, which is one stop from Kings Cross, or a brisk walk.

Why

We want to help charities get better at tackling the difficult issues that the media, donors and even staff often ask. By the end of the day, we hope that participants will feel confident in addressing these issues, and we will have some great examples on audio and video for others to learn from

Who’s coming along

We are hoping for a mixture of charities large and small and suppliers who find themselves in the firing line. The numbers are limited to 50.

The topics

Three topics are pretty clear:

1) Why a charity CEO is worth their salary

2) Why charities need to spend money on fundraising

3) Why as a charity it isn’t a waste to spend money on management/admin

We are looking for a 4th topic. We have had suggestions of ‘ethical investments’ and ‘how effective charities are’ and we would welcome any delegate suggestions. Before the day, we will send out a list of questions for delegates to be thinking about and ready to answer in the group.

The trainers

We have hired Inside Edge to be our media trainers for the day. We have also asked a number of sector journalists to come along and help the groups hone and refine their arguments (they will also be covering the day, but no individual or charity will be mentioned by name without the individual’s agreement)

The format

Each topic will have the following format:

45 mins – In groups of 6-8, each group member will practice being questioned on the topic by other group members. Group feeds back to each group member.

30 mins – Each group choose best one or two delegates who will refine their spiel and present to everybody.

15 mins – Best two or three participants are given feedback and then asked to repeat for video/audio.

The cost

Free for charities and non-profits with an annual income of less than £5 million, £100 plus VAT. for organisations over £5 mill. All cancellations with less than 24 hours notice will be charged, even if they were free!
